FCCN

FCCN - Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (National Foundation for Scientific Computing) has been responsible for the management of the .pt TLD since 1991, and is honoured to host the next ICANN Meetings, which will take place in Lisbon from 26th to 30th March 2007, at the Corinthia Hotel.

FCCN is a non-profit making private institution of public utility that was founded by public entities. Having begun its activity in January 1987, FCCN is celebrating his 20th anniversary.

Main Attributions:

• Planning, management and operation of the national research and education network (RCTS - Rede Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade - Science, Technology and Society Network), a high performance network that connects all public universities, most other higher education institutions, state laboratories, R&D institutions, public primary schools (1st, 2nd and 3rd grade) and secondary schools to the Internet. RCTS is a member of the GÉANT European research and education network;
• Supporting governmental bodies and the R&D community with national projects designed to educate people about the Information and Knowledge Society;
• Registry of the .pt domain/sub-domains (DNS.PT)
• Operating GigaPIX, a neutral Internet exchange that currently connects the main national ISPs.

DNS

FCCN is charged with the responsibility of the management, registry and maintenance of the Domains under .PT under the scope of the delegation made by the IANA - Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (RFC 1032/3/4 and 1591).

FCCN organises the space for .pt names through the use of classifiers designed to distribute the .pt address space in such a way as to it facilitate the accommodation of different kinds of institutions and sectors of activity. Therefore, the registry of domains may be made directly under '.pt', or under one of the domain classifiers (.pt sub-domains), '.net.pt', '.gov.pt', '.org.pt', '.edu.pt' , '.int.pt', '.publ.pt', '.com.pt' or '.nome.pt'.

There are currently more than 111,000 registered .pt domains. The DNS.PT activity is characterised by a solid Internet infrastructure and a very small number of disputes regarding .PT namespace. DNS.PT has formal agreements with more than 100 national and international registrars.
